Halfway between Bari and Brindisi on the Adriatic Coast,
Masseria San Domenico lies at the heart of the Apulia region, forming
the "heel" of the Italian "boot". This luxury Hotel
and Thalassotherapy Centre built around a 14th century Templar house is
complemented by San Domenico Golf. Three kilometres distant from each
other, both San Domenico Golf and Masseria are under the same ownership
and linked by a complimentary shuttle, forming a splendid golf resort.
Masseria San Domenico lies about five hundred metres from the sea, its
whitewashed buildings standing amidst ancient olive groves. The core of
the building itself dates back to the 14th century, while the surrounding
structures were built at the turn of the century. Keeping intact the original
structure of the farmstead, a "masseria" is a large agricultural
estate, San Domenico was carefully restored and turned into a five star
boutique hotel.
The centrepiece of the resort is undoubtedly its magnificent free form
swimming pool nestling amidst silver olive groves. Filled with naturally
filtered seawater, it reflects the philosophy of the hotels Thalassotherapy
Centre which offers a whole range of spa treatments and facilities.
Accommodation comprises a choice of atmospheric rooms and suites, each
individually decorated and tastefully furnished with original period furniture
and views over the lush estate and the Adriatic Sea in the distance. In
spite of their ancient setting and rustic atmosphere, each room is lavishly
equipped and fitted with every modern conveniences.
San Domenico's main restaurant has a suggestive vaulted dining room, formerly
used as an oil press and now serving Apulian specialities accompanied
by a selection of the best regional wines. The olive oil , vegetables
and most of the fruits are grown on the estate, while fresh fish and seafood
come directly from the nearby coastal villages. Additionally, there is
also a seasonal Pool Grill, a Breakfast Room, Cocktail Bar and Cigar Room
as well as a restaurant at the clubhouse.
Also known as Egnathia for its proximity to this Greek archaeologic site,
the golf course at San Domenico was laid out by European Golf Design and
built to USGA specifications. The course runs close to the Adriatic and
is blessed with sweeping sea views from every tee, fairway and green.
At San Domenico Golf Course's 9th hole, a red tower stands out against
the blue sky and sea; the Masseria Cimino, an 18th C building turned into
a Guesthouse. The Masseria has 15 rooms furnished in Mediterranean style,
air conditioned, with marble bathrooms and equipped with all facilities.
Some have a fireplace and others a balcony overlooking the golf course
and the Adriatic Sea.
