The name of Gstaad has become synonymous with the idea
of sophisticated holidays in an unspoiled natural environment. It is precisely
the apparent contradiction between the presence of a highly sophisticated
clientele and the survival of traditional lifestyles, crafts and architecture
that forms the enormous appeal of this trendy alpine resort. And Gstaad
Palace embodies perfectly this philosophy.
Inaugurated in 1913, this extraordinary hotel managed for three generations
by the Scherz family, has earned an unchallenged reputation for discreetly
refined hospitality and for welcoming the most discerning international
travellers. An unusual, almost fairy tale architecture amidst wooden chalets
and green meadows is the setting for warm and comfortable interiors, characterised
by a hint of rustic elegance in harmony with its traditional Alpine environment.
All guestrooms are intimate and comfortable, lavishly furnished and with
splendid views across the rooftops of the village to the lofty peaks and
ridges of the Alps beyond. The Gstaad Palace is a blend of great hotel
keeping tradition and an equally great gastronomic tradition. The culinary
offer ranges from casual to the most elegant, with several restaurants,
barbecues, grills and bars disseminated throughout the hotel and the gardens.
Sports and health facilities at the Gstaad Palace include an Olympic outdoor
heated swimming pool (Summer only), indoor pool, tennis and squash courts,
and a state-of-the-art Wellness Centre. The Wellness Centre offers a series
of treatments ranging from sport and classic massages to reflexology and
thalassotherapy, and features a fitness corner with sauna, hammam, solarium
and gymnasium, as well as a Beauty Farm.
Golfers will find an excellent course at the Gstaad Golf Club. Venue of
the Gstaad Pro Am Open, this splendid alpine course was laid out through
a wooded valley listed as a natural reserve. In these scenic surroundings,
Donald Harradine laid out a nine hole course back in 1960, which has been
recently extended to 18 holes by his son Peter. At 1.400 metres (over
4,500 ft.) above see level, the golfing season at Gstaad is restricted
to Summer, from mid-May to the end of October, but this annual break when
the course is snowbound, provides for lush greens and fairways during
the Summer season as well as a dense, intricate and treacherous rough!
There is another scenic course down the Sarine/Saanen Valley at the Golf
de la Gruyere, laid out by Jeremy Pern in a spectacular location on the
shores of Lake Gruyere, in this pristine alpine region famed for its cheese.
