Kauri Cliffs
Matauri Bay - Northland - North Island - New Zealand

New Zealand boasts the highest ratio of golf courses per inhabitant in the world, yet it is still an unlikely golf destination on the world travel market. But this should change soon with the thunderous entry of two magnificent courses in the World Top 100: Kauri Cliffs and Cape Kidnappers. Both owned and developed by former Wall Street pundit Julian Robertson, they share scenic cliff top locations on the North Island's Pacific Coast.

Set on 6,000 acres of rolling coastal farmland in Matauri Bay, a four hour drive north of Auckland in the northern most province of New Zealand. Kauri Cliffs features a Relais & Chateaux lodge and a world class golf course. The Lodge at Kauri Cliffs affords spectacular 180-degree views of the Pacific Ocean that span from Cape Brett to the offshore Cavalli Islands. The main lodge, which overlooks the golf course, consists of a spacious beamed living room, lounges, dining room and verandas.

Accommodations is comprised of eleven cottages distributed in a staggered row along a meandering path on the edge of a native forest. Each bungalow has two suites fronted by a veranda with views over the golf course to the ocean, and features a comfortable bedroom and living area with open fireplace, walk-in closet and en suite bathrooms.

Gourmet a la carte cuisine is served at The Lodge, prepared only with New Zealand's finest produce such as fresh vegetables, lamb, beef and seafood. Wonderful picnic sites abound on the property and a choice of picnic baskets is available.

Amenities at Kauri Cliffs include two tennis courts, an infinity pool with whirlpool, a spa and fitness studio, and three secluded private sandy beaches. Kauri Cliffs is still a working farm featuring mobs of sheep and cattle and guests can follow the Farm Manager on his daily round. Nature walks and 4WD tours of the estate are also organised to discover its 6,000 acres of pastures, forests, rivers, cascades and coastline.
Conceived, designed and built to blend with the natural features of this exceptional piece of land, Kauri Cliffs' golf course offers spectacular ocean views from most of its holes. The front nine extends inland through marsh, forest and farmland, while the back nine runs along the coast, six of its holes playing right alongside the cliffs.

Playing over 7,000 yards from the back tees, but with five set of tees to challenge every skill level, the course was designed by David Harman of Golf Course Consultants, Florida, who has worked previously on more than 200 courses worldwide with Arnold Palmer's design company. Golf clinics held by resident NZPGA Pro's are available twice weekly, while Kauri Cliffs' touring pro Michael Campbell runs golf clinics each year at the resort, a very popular event with visitors.
