In the US Virgin Island of St. Croix, east of Puerto Rico, The Buccaneer is an upscale golf resort in a prime location overlooking the Caribbean sea and Christiansted Harbour. Owned and managed by the Armstrong family since 1948, the Buccaneer has evolved into a resort considered one of the finest in the Caribbean. But the history of The Buccaneer goes way back to 1653, when Charles Martel, Knight of Malta, established the first building on the estate. Later in 1773, the Dane Governor turned the French Great House into a sugar factory, erecting a sugar mill that still stands today.

Accommodation at this luxury yet unassuming family resort comprises of rooms and suites in the historic Great House and self contained units distributed through the property, from the hilltop main building to the very shores of the Caribbean - Family Cottage Suites cater for the special needs of families. All rooms have a terrace or balcony with beautiful vistas of the golf course and/or the sea, are tastefully furnished and comfortably fitted with every modern amenities. Dining options at The Buccaneer range from The Terrace, offering al fresco dining in the Great House with views of the fairways and the sea, to the beachside Mermaid and the poolside Grotto Grill.

Sport and leisure facilities at The Buccaneer are second to none, with a special emphasis on families and kids. The resort boast three beaches, the Mermaid Beach, Grotto Beach and Whistle Beach. The Beach Shack Watersports Centre offers a range of activities and equipment, many of them complimentary. The Tennis Centre has eight courts, two of them floodlit, a proshop and a resident pro that will arrange lessons for all levels. The Hideaway Spa offers massage and sauna as well as body and face treatments, while the Fitness Centre features a range of cardiovascular and weight training machines. These facilities are complemented by a two-mile jogging trail running across the property.

The Buccaneer features a scenic eighteen golf course stretching across the resort and along the shores of the Beauregard Bay. The spectacular views of the Caribbean Sea, which can be seen from thirteen holes, extend on a clear day to St. Thomas, St. John and the British Virgin Islands. Designed in 1973 by Long Island PGA professional Bob Joyce, this challenging par 70 hilly course has a great variety of holes and will require every club in the bag, in particular on breezy days. There is another excellent course on St. Croix island at the Carambola Golf & Country Club, laid out by the Master Robert Trent Jones Senior on the former Rock Resort, built by Laurence Rockfeller in the early 1960's.
